An apple orchard is one of my favourite ways to experience autumn in New Hampshire because it combines several things the state does particularly well: rural scenery, local food, fall colour and an excuse to spend time outdoors.
Pick your own apples
Many New Hampshire orchards offer pick-your-own apples during harvest season. Walking between rows of trees and choosing your own fruit is simple, inexpensive entertainment, particularly for families.
Different apple varieties ripen at different times, so the selection changes as the season progresses.
Come hungry
The apples are only part of the reason to visit. Farm shops may sell fresh cider, baked goods, local produce and maple products. And if cider doughnuts are being made, I would not leave without trying one while it is fresh.
Make it part of a foliage drive
Orchard season overlaps beautifully with New Hampshire’s famous autumn colours. Instead of driving from viewpoint to viewpoint all day, break up the journey with an orchard visit.
It gives everyone a chance to get out of the car and turns leaf-peeping into a more complete New England experience.
Check before you go
Harvest dates depend on weather, location and variety. Pick-your-own availability can also change quickly after a busy weekend, so check the orchard’s current information before making a long detour.
There is no single New Hampshire orchard you absolutely have to visit. I would choose one that fits naturally into your route. The important ingredients are trees full of apples, a cool autumn day, fresh cider and preferably a warm doughnut waiting at the end.
