Lake Winnipesaukee – Exploring New Hampshire’s Largest Lake

Lake Winnipesaukee is the centrepiece of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region and one of the state’s classic summer destinations. With wooded islands, mountain views and communities scattered around a long, irregular shoreline, it is much more than a single place to stop for a photograph.

Choose your lakeside base

Different communities around the lake offer different experiences. Meredith has a pleasant waterfront and makes a convenient base, while other towns and villages provide their own marinas, beaches, restaurants and accommodation.

Because the lake is large, where you stay matters more than you might expect.

Get onto the water

You understand Lake Winnipesaukee much better from the water than from the road. Boat cruises, paddling and other water activities provide views of islands, coves and mountains that are difficult to appreciate from shore.

Always check current schedules and seasonal availability when planning organised boat trips.

Enjoy the shoreline

Beaches, waterfront walks and lakeside meals can easily fill a relaxed summer day. Families may want to mix swimming and attractions, while couples or road trippers can simply move between small communities at a slower pace.

Visit beyond summer

Summer is the obvious season, but the Lakes Region changes beautifully in autumn when foliage spreads across the surrounding hills.

I would avoid trying to drive around the entire lake simply to say you did it. Pick a section, spend time by the water and get onto a boat if possible. Lake Winnipesaukee is best enjoyed slowly – preferably with nowhere urgent to be next.
